Lomo ELF-1 Ultra Compact Night Vision Monocular with Infrared (IR) Illuminator.

The unit itself seems well constructed, it's very compact and has a decent battery life, but it shares the same limitations of all Gen-I units: the image tends to be blurry, the field of view is narrow and -most importantly- the light gain is not very impressive.

For example, if you are outdoor on a moonless night, you will see much more just using your dark adapted eyes or a pair of good 7x50 binoculars. However, this unit seems to increase the contrast of small details when there's some light around (i.e. moonlight) or when you use the infrared illuminator, but since the illuminator is not very powerful, it will work only at ranges of less than 15 or 20 yards.

Overall, it is a good product if you want to experience night vision for a low price, but I will not miss it very much if I forget to put it in my backpack for the next hiking trip.
