Gitzo G1278M Magnesium 2 Series PTFE Center Ball Head with Quick Release Plate

This is an excellent product. I use it with my Gitzo tripod. However, I think the product claims it will handle about a 16 pound camera/lens combo. I am using it mostly with a Nikon D300 and the Nikon 200-400 mm VR monster lens. This is probably close to 12 pounds. If I had it to do over again, I would buy the tripod head that will handle a 20 pound [or more] load. While it does work with an approximate 12 pound load, you better really tighten it down. I think it would be safer if you are more conservative and get a head that the manufacture claims will handle about twice the actual weight you intend to support. With this much money on the line if you aren't very careful - well, it could be an expensive way to save money to get the smaller ball head. I like the one knob adjust and it is Gitzo so quality is never a problem.
